sisters, tearjerkers

performed by annakai hayakawa-geshlider and lucia zezza.

the work explores the mechanics of contemporary queer performance, using the america west and advent of rodeo clowns as a proxy. the video follows two characters— a failed figure of cowboy masculinity and a troublesome antihero. sisters, tearjerkers utilizes lack of skill and competence to ground performances in “inability”, namely the inability to embody a stable identity. by employing elements of slapstick, physical, and wacky comedy, performers work to rearrange the operations and implications of the “western frontier”, i.e. capability, self-reliance, and violence.
